Job Overview
Location: Mississauga, Ontario
Structure: Two-storey detached house with a built-in garage
Problem: Exterior rat activity around the home
Service: Rat treatment
Visits: Three visits
Summary
Our team at Pest Control Mississauga completed a multi-visit exterior rat treatment after reports of consistent rat activity around a residential property. The service focused on inspection, population control using secure exterior bait stations, and follow-up monitoring to confirm reduced activity. All work was completed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.
Background / Property Context
The property is a two-storey detached home with a built-in garage, deck structures, and landscaped exterior areas. Mature trees, soil coverage, and deck construction created sheltered ground-level zones conducive to rodent movement and burrowing.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported a high level of rat activity on the exterior of the property, including visible movement near the deck and concerns about potential damage to exterior components.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial visit, our technician conducted a full exterior inspection. Signs consistent with rat activity were observed, including burrowing near deck supports and evidence of chewing damage to an exterior electrical cable. Ground-level voids and disturbed soil were noted around structural elements, indicating active travel routes.
Photos from the inspection show:
- Exterior yard and deck areas with nearby tree cover
- Tamper-resistant bait stations positioned at ground level
- Burrow openings and disturbed soil near structural supports
- Chewing damage visible on an exterior cable

Cause Analysis
Rats are an invasive species in Ontario and commonly establish exterior populations where shelter and food sources are available. Deck structures, soil voids, and foundation transitions can provide protected harborage. Once established, exterior rat populations can expand quickly without active control measures.
Treatment / Removal
A licensed exterminator from our team, Richard, implemented an exterior rat treatment program. Two large, weighted, tamper-proof bait stations were installed at strategic exterior locations to target the active population. The treatment approach focused on population reduction while maintaining safety for people, pets, and non-target wildlife.
All materials were applied and monitored in compliance with provincial regulations.

Exclusion & Repairs
Trenching and exclusion work beneath the deck was identified as a potential long-term prevention measure and was quoted during the initial visit. The homeowner elected not to proceed with this exclusion work at that time. No structural sealing or repairs were completed as part of this service.
Outcome & Confirmation
At the second visit, bait stations showed heavy feeding, with bait fully consumed, confirming significant rat activity and treatment uptake. Stations were rebaited accordingly.
By the third visit, the homeowner reported no further exterior rat activity and confirmed satisfaction with the results. Ongoing annual exterior treatment was scheduled to help manage future rat pressure on the property.
Technician Notes
- Visit 1: Exterior inspection completed; burrowing and cable damage observed. Treatment plan discussed and exclusion option quoted.
- Visit 2: Bait stations found empty due to heavy feeding; stations rebaited.
- Visit 3: No new exterior activity reported; monitoring confirmed reduced pressure.
