How to Deal With a Rat Plague The Permaculture Way?

The world is suffering from an epidemic of rats and has been for over a hundred years. Many years ago the plant had millions of wolves, birds of prey, large cats and other predators of rodents to keep the population in check. As our love of fur and stuffed animals have shown we exterminated just about every wolf, cat and bird of prey from the world in a mad dash to collect their beauty. This has resulted in a plague of mice and rats who have no predators. In cities, they need not worry about large birds or wild cats and wolves eating them. They are alone and free to take full advantage of humanity. This has caused a nightmare situation of rats filling restaurants and infesting homes. They cost the world tens of billions in damage and hundreds of billions in lost food stores. The issue was caused by us, so we will have to solve it on our own.

Permaculture is the idea of returning society to a more basic and renewable form of living. The use of chemical poisons is not recommended because it could kill a predator that will protect you from rats. Instead, the goal is to kill the rats in the most direct way possible with well-baited rat snap traps. The modern ones, not the wooden ones which are inhumane and rarely kills the rat but leave it to die from bleeding and starvation. Instead, use the large plastic ones, bait them very well with bacon fat and shellfish shells and anything rats love. It is incredibly important that you do not let the rats die inside the walls of your house. While mice have very low water content and desiccate when they die, rats are filled with water and when they die in a wall you will know from the powerful smell and the growing stain on the wall. Rats rot.

Rats can smell each other and they can smell the scent of death so once you have caught a rat you must get rid of the trap, do not try to clean it simply dispose of it and the rat in a sealed garbage bag and put it outside. This will keep the traps functioning and help you catch as many as possible without them getting wise to what you are doing. Now, this is not enough, the most important part of the process of getting rid of rats is taking away their food and water sources. If you have a pond or water feature or pool, drain it right away. If you have bird feeders take them down and vacuum up the seeds. Do not leave your garbage accessible and outside, put it in the garage and lock it up. Don’t feed pets or children outside as they both make a big mess. All of this along with snap traps will end the rat infestation, in time.
