Rat Treatment Case and Exclusion inspection Study – Mississauga

Job Overview

Location: Mississauga, Ontario
Structure: Two-storey detached house with a built-in garage
Problem: Interior and exterior rat activity
Service: Rat treatment
Visits: 4

Summary

Our team completed a four-visit rat treatment at a detached residential property in Mississauga after the homeowner reported ongoing rat activity both inside and outside the home. The service focused on population control using exterior bait stations and interior trapping, combined with an exterior inspection to identify structural entry points.

Background / Property Context

The structure was a two-storey detached home with a built-in garage. The foundation perimeter included multiple exposed and accessible areas at grade level. These conditions can increase the likelihood of rodent access if gaps are present.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported a high level of rat activity inside the home and along the exterior foundation. Prior to contacting us, the homeowner attempted their own exclusion by covering a wall vent with drywall material, which rats were able to chew through.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial visit, our technician conducted a full exterior inspection of the structure. Multiple foundation-level gaps were observed that were accessible from ground level and could be used by rats to enter the building envelope.

Interior inspection findings were consistent with rodent activity, including damaged building materials where chewing appeared to have occurred.

Photos from the inspection show:

  • Open gaps along the foundation where masonry and trim meet at ground level
  • Displaced exterior materials exposing voids beneath the structure
  • Interior wall or ceiling material with visible chew damage and an irregular opening

Cause Analysis

Rats were able to access the structure due to unsealed foundation gaps and vulnerable exterior openings at ground level. The use of soft building materials for previous sealing attempts did not provide a rodent-resistant barrier. These conditions allowed repeated entry and sustained activity inside the home.

Treatment / Removal

This rat treatment was performed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.

The treatment plan included:

  • Installation of two large, weighted, tamper-resistant bait stations on the exterior to address the outdoor rat population
  • Placement of large, baited snap traps inside the home to prevent rats from dying within wall cavities

The exterior bait stations were rebaited on Visits 2 and 3 to maintain effectiveness and monitor activity levels.

Exclusion & Repairs

During the first visit, the technician prepared a quote for sealing the identified exterior foundation gaps. The homeowner elected not to proceed with professional exclusion work and advised they would complete the sealing themselves. No exclusion or structural repairs were performed by our team as part of this service.

Outcome & Confirmation

By the fourth visit, the homeowner reported no further rat activity inside the home and confirmed they were satisfied with the results of the treatment. No new interior activity was reported at that time.

Technician Notes

The initial inspection and treatment setup were completed by Dylan. Activity levels decreased over the course of the service, and follow-up visits confirmed improved conditions following ongoing bait station maintenance.
