Mice have been a long-standing house partner of humans since we learned to hunt more than we could eat and grow more than we could eat. We started storing it and that was when animals learned they could get a quick meal if they found a way into the human’s food housing. Since then animals and rodents have searched for food on human properties and in human houses, having evolved beside us, changing to be comfortable around humans and to know and understand their homes. In Ontario, the most common mouse is the house mouse.

This mouse enters the home, often a pregnant female, and then creates a nest on the lower floor of the house, often in the walls. These mice are no longer truly wild and need humans to survive. Wild mice, like deer mice and field mice, do not need human food but will eat it all the same. Their goal is to enter a part of your home you do not often enter, like the attic, for the warmth it provides. They will nest and breed up there but will leave daily to hunt for food outside.
The house mouse is found around the world and is especially problematic in the west where all houses are heated and food is abundant. Winter is also a major cause of any animal penetrating your home. While there is a lot you can do on your own to prevent mice from coming to your property and entering your home, once they have it is very hard to get rid of them. You can store your garbage with a lock so animals cannot get into it, you can get rid of water features and bird feeders and make sure to clean your bbq very well after every use. All of this will help prevent animals from coming to your property.
If you have a house mouse issue then the best way to resolve it is with a professional. The rodent technician will come to the property and begin with an external inspection of the house. He will be looking for possible entryways the mice made or could use to enter the house. He will then seal those openings. The technician will then enter the home and inspect for areas of highest activity. This involves looking for something called mouse runways which are collective pathways the mice use to avoid being seen. All mice use these same runways so they can be easy to find for a trained technician. He will then place on these highly active areas a tamperproof, locked bait station. The ministry of the environment is very protective when dealing with rodenticide as the chance of child or pet poising can be high. However, rodenticide’s function is easily reversed. It works by cutting off vitamin K, which causes internal bleeding and dehydration. However, direct injection of vitamin K will fully reverse all of the effects of the poison.
