Materials Mice Can Chew and How to Recognize Bite Marks

Mice are a very careful and quiet species. They are capable of living and breeding in your home for weeks and even months without anyone noticing. If the owner is aged, with a bad sigh and hearing the mice could spend years in the house without being noticed. Once you detect the presence of mice you will need to decide how you will get rid of them. You can try domestic methods or you can call in a professional. The choice is yours but the domestic method is harder, takes longer and always ends up more expensive than calling in a professional.

The easiest way to find mice is by locating their feces, the second-best method is to locate their entryways and hole inside the house they use to travel around the home unseen. Mice have very sharp and long incisors that continue to grow for their entire lives. These teeth must be shaven down to stop them from cutting the mouse’s mouth open. They do this by chewing on non-food items. They are capable of chewing holes through drywall, wood, aluminum and copper. They cannot chew through steel unless it is very thin, like steel mesh. They will chew through your walls and defecate and urinate in the insulation and chew on wires in the walls that could create a fire hazard that could burn your home down.

If you are finding chewed holes in food packages or stored food in the basement or garage then you are likely seeing the actions of a mouse trying to steal your food. The package should be thrown away because the food is not safe, mice urinate and defecate on their food and that can cause Hantavirus when eaten which a severely dangerous respiratory illness caused specifically by mice.

Now, if you are lucky enough, or to be more accurate, unlucky enough, to find a mouse nest then you can be sure that you have an infestation and that it has been going on for weeks or months. At this point, the best action is to call a professional who can seal up opening on the outside of your house and use commercial grade poison to kill the mice already inside.

If you want to try to eliminate the infestation without the help of a professional it may take longer and will be more expensive as you will have to buy just about everything new when technicians already have a stock of everything they need which they can bring right away and use to treat your home.
